Week 2- Lesson Plan for Sonlight Core A & F.I.A.R.

We are heading into week 2, and I am a very visual list type person...well, actually, I need a visual list to keep me anywhere near organized and on task, because I'm actually a 'get distracted by everything' type person:)

I thought I would post my 'goals' or lesson plan for the week, and then at the end of the week post a summary of what we did as well as photos of something fun that stood out to the kids!

Here is the lesson plan for Week 2:

Circle Time: We do a circle time every morning before we technically 'start' schooling. I'm going to do a more in depth post about this, but basically, we light a candle, pray for others and our day, sing our memory verse song, and read our FIAR (Five In a Row) Book.

Then we head to our kitchen table and begin or morning activities.

FIAR: Our book for the week will be:  Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans.

Madeline

We get all of our books for FIAR at the library.
I put them on hold a week in advance and they are usually waiting for me
whenever I can go pick them up!

We will be learning about Paris, France by locating on our Map,
and talking a little bit about the culture at the time of Madeline along with landmarks that make places recognizable- ie The Eiffel Tower.
We will also talk about human relationships in the story.
We will be going over our Daily Routine in the mornings, and comparing them to Madeline's...
trying to get back into a daily rhythm before the start of homeschooling.

Bible: Read up through the story of Jacob

We will record events on our Timeline, discuss the different stories.

I am also going to start a project with Lily where she finds her own  'favorite' verse this week. I want her not just to memorize verses, but realize that they have a big impact on her life, and they are God's Word that he has written for her.  I will give her a bunch of verses and have her read them to see if any stand out to her. We will then do some sort of art to create a verse card that she can keep in a frame by her bed to remind her that God speaks to her!

History/ Geography:
We will learn about how the Early travellers moved around, and will actually make a mini coracle! http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4c/Coracle_Hampi.jpg
Coracle
We will also begin to explore the homes and clothes of early Egyptians.
(Still working on some hands-on activites for egypt)

Read-Alouds:
We will continue reading The Boxcar Children  which my girl's love! I'm so excited that they are able to pay attention to a chapter book, be genuinely interested, and have wonderful conversations after each chapter!!! This is why Sonlight is awesome!

We will also continue reading poetry out of
The Llama Who Had No Pajama and The Mother Goose Book.

Math:
Lily will continue her review of her Math Skills with the Primer book from Math-U-See.  I don't have a plan as to how far she will get because she can do about 7 lessons in one hour... once the subject matter gets a little more difficult, I will slow her down and do more daily lessons.

Handwriting:
Continue with Handwriting Without Tears, 3 Worksheets a week.

Reading and Language Arts-
Start All About Reading Lesson 1-3, Continue with Creative Expression-
Summarizing stories we read, and work on story sequencing.

Science:  Work on the Seasons- Going to do this shutterstock photo I found on Pinterest...perfect for Lily!

I'd like to do something like this using cue tips, and a tree template like this.

That's about all I have for now...I may add some things during the week, and I'll definitely share in the end of week Summary Post !!

Thanks!!

Kristen

Week 22: Where We Live! Florida

Our last lesson on Butterflies is actually still going on.
We just received our caterpillars and they are sitting
in our dining room in their jar eating
until they get big enough to do something...er,
get out of that jar.
(We are so excited to watch this whole process but boy,
does it take a long time!)
Updated Pictures to follow.

Our library is teaching about the Continents this summer.
I was thinking that it would be great
to do some sort of geography with the girls.
I also thought how important it is to teach
them about where they live....
hence, our lovely state of Florida.
We will also be memorizing our town,
and trying to memorize our address.

Sidenote: Lily has been reciting her phone number for a while now...
It is about 4 digits less than a real phone number.
Perhaps that is the next topic....our phone number!

As I am thinking about this topic of Florida,
I am realizing that there are so many things to talk about!
We will focus on where it is located on a map of the US,
what types of animals are 'indigenous' here,
and special facts about our state.
I also found that there are a ton of fictional children's books
that are based upon Florida which is what you will find in the list below.
I love to read books that are based on our topic
and not just informational books too.

Songs:
FYI- The Swanee River is the Official State Song of Florida!

The Swanee River
(Old Folks at Home)
Written by Stephen C. Foster

Way down upon de Swanee Ribber,
Far, far away,
Dere's wha my heart is turning ebber,
Dere's wha de old folks stay.
All up and down de whole creation
Sadly I roam,
Still longing for de old plantation,
And for de old folks at home.

Chorus

All de world am sad and dreary,
Eb-rywhere I roam;
Oh, darkeys, how my heart grows weary,
Far from de old folks at home!

2nd verse

All round de little farm I wandered
When I was young,
Den many happy days I squandered,
Many de songs I sung.
When I was playing wid my brudder
Happy was I;
Oh, take me to my kind old mudder!
Dere let me live and die.

3rd Verse

One little hut among de bushes,
One dat I love
Still sadly to my memory rushes,
No matter where I rove.
When will I see de bees a-humming
All round de comb?
When will I hear de banjo strumming,
Down in my good old home?

Snacks:
Thought we could try a few recipes out of here for dinner!

Week 21: Butterflies

This week marks the beginning of a more 'laid back' schedule for us.
This gives me more time to spend
with my children having fun and learning!
We are all very intrigued by butterflies,
and with the first signs of summer upon us,
what better than to learn about butterflies!
I have ordered our caterpillars from www.insectlore.com
where we will receive 5 caterpillars + food!
Hopefully they will come soon...
the girls are getting anxious
(and by girls, I mean me).
The first part of the week will be about Caterpillars,
then we will talk about the life cycle of a butterfly.
We will be using the Eric Carle book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Week 19: Bridges

When you randomly ask your child what he/she would like to learn about,
make sure you are prepared to hear
the most random thing you can think of....

enter Bridges.

Why on earth my daughter, while eating bagels at the bagel place,
tells me she wants to learn about bridges is beyond me.
I even looked around (we were outside)
to see if there pictures or logos with bridges.
Nope.
Out of thin air; bridges.

So here it is, a lesson about Bridges.

Books

CoverGolden Gate Bridge by Riggs, Kate.

CoverBrooklyn Bridge by Tieck, Sarah, 1976-
CoverThe bridge is up! by Bell, Babs, 1944-
Cover Who's that tripping over my bridge? by Salley, Coleen.
CoverHey kid, want to buy a bridge? by Scieszka, Jon. (Assuming this is a chapter book, but we'll see if its appropriate for reading aloud when we get it.)
CoverCross a bridge by Hunter, Ryan Ann.

CoverThe monkey bridge by Martin, Rafe

CoverThe family under the bridge by Carlson, Natalie Savage.
CoverTwenty-one elephants by Bildner, Phil.

Crafts

Bright Hub has a great lesson plan for The Billy Goats Gruff...story. You can read it online here. I'll read the story, and then we'll talk about bridges, and why we have them.

Then we'll construct our own popsicle stick bridge. Everything I have found is for a little bit older aged children, so I think we'll just wing it. We'll probably make a bridge more like the ones in the Billy Goats Gruff picture, rather than a real 3d bridge...but we'll see. If I get daring, we might try to build THIS bridge.

If only we could accomplish this.... {Photo Source}

Here's a great Bridges Clip Art Site...

Songs:

London Bridge is Falling Down ( Have to do this one!)

London Bridge is falling down,
Falling down, Falling down.

London Bridge is falling down,
My fair lady.

Take a key and lock her up,
Lock her up, Lock her up.

Take a key and lock her up,
My fair lady.

How will we build it up,
Build it up, Build it up?

How will we build it up,
My fair lady?

Build it up with silver and gold,
Silver and gold, Silver and gold.

Build it up with silver and gold,
My fair lady.

Gold and silver I have none,
I have none, I have none.

Gold and silver I have none,
My fair lady.

Build it up with needles and pins,
Needles and pins, Needles and pins.

Build it up with needles and pins,
My fair lady.

Pins and needles bend and break,
Bend and break, Bend and break.

Pins and needles bend and break,
My fair lady.

Build it up with wood and clay,
Wood and clay, Wood and clay.

Build it up with wood and clay,
My fair lady.

Wood and clay will wash away,
Wash away, Wash away.

Wood and clay will wash away,
My fair lady.

Build it up with stone so strong,
Stone so strong, Stone so strong.

Build it up with stone so strong,
My fair lady.

Stone so strong will last so long,
Last so long, Last so long.

Stone so strong will last so long,
My fair lady.

Snacks:

We'll probably make bridges out of pretzel dough, and I will bake them...

Thanks!
